Green tax causes Ryanair to drop Swedish flights

Ryanair boeing 737
If airports are too expensive Ryanair has a straightforward policy of not flying there. So when the Swedish Government proposed an airport environment tax of SEK 94 (£7 / $13) on economy flights within Europe starting this August. Ryanair responded by dropping a number of its flights to Sweden but not mentioning that the tax was aimed at mitigating the environmental damage accrued by aviation. Ryanair will drop its London Luton <> Stockholm-Vasteras and reduce its Malmo-Sturup <> London-Stansted and Gothenburg City Airport <> Glasgow-Prestwick flight frequencies from the 28th of October 2006.

The debate is now being opened up as Ryanair are not alone in moving their operations away from Sweden. Copenhagen has recently halved its airport taxes and as a result has had many low cost airlines including Air Berlin, FlyMe and Wizz Air locate routes there instead of Sweden.
At this moment in time the EU is looking closely at the tax and at plans to exempt some routes. This would be in breach of EU competition rules so the tax may not be implemented.

If it is implemented then there is one big issue that needs addressing as far as I am concerned.
That is the tax when levied as an airport tax does not differentiate between airlines operating fuel efficient aircraft running with high load factors and those airlines with poor fuel efficiency and low load factors. Taxing aviation fuel is one way of addressing this issue as this would be least detrimental to airlines with a low fuel burn per passenger. The problem would be that to work effectively it needs to be adopted across Europe. Another alternative would be to levy a tax related to the aircraft's destination and average fuel consumption figures. Thus a Boeing 737-200 would pay more for a flight from Stockholm to London than a Boeing 737-800 with blended winglets. The tax can then be related directly to the amount of Carbon dioxide produced by the flights.

Ryanair increase checked in baggage fees

Ryanair is to discourage passengers with checked in bags even more. From 1 September 2006 persons paying to check in baggage online will rise by £1 to £3.50 per bag from 1 September 2006. From 1 November the total checked in allowance will be reduced from its present 20 kilograms to 15 kilograms per person. The cost for bags not pre paid when booking will still be subject to the £5 per bag charge as now.
Ryanair has made it clear that it doesn't want passengers with lots of heavy bags that require baggage handlers when most passengers use the airline for a short visits and can easily get by with the carry on allowance of 10 kilograms.
What is your view? Please leave a comment.

Monarch expands with Luton <> Ibiza & Almeria

Monarch Airlines
Monarch Airlines is adding new aircraft and routes from 1 May 2007. A new Airbus A320 will be added to its London Luton based fleet. With this aircraft the low cost airline will service a new route to Ibiza up to five times per week. It will also service Almeria four times per week. In addition to the new routes the new flights will be added to existing Luton routes. Both Palma and Faro will see a substantial increase in the number of flights flown.
Monarch has researched the low cost market and found that they offer a service that few of its competitors can match. They offer seat booking, better catering and free newspapers in order to cater for passengers needs.

New Gdansk <> Cork route for Wizz Air

GdanskCork <> Gdansk is the latest route from Wizz Air. Starting on 15 December 2006 the airline will fly the route three time per week, bringing the total number of Wizz Air routes from the city to eight.

Both locations are ports and have lots for visitors. Cork has plenty of places worthy of a visit including the Crawford Municipal Art Gallery, the Cork Public Museum and St. Anne's Church with the famous Bells of Shandon. Others include the 17th century English Market Bishop Lucey Park, St. Francis Church, the South Mall and Cork City Gaol.

A little further afield you'’ll find the Cobh once named Queenstown following a vist by Queen Victoria. It was from here that over 6 million Irish emigrated to the New World. A visitor centre in the old railway station brings their story to life. Another destination for visitors to the area is the world famous Blarney Castle. Legend has it that kissing the Blarney Stone gives the kisser the gift of eloquence. You can tell that I haven't kissed it just by reading my posts.

Gdansk is a former Hanseatic League port with strong German influences having been part of the Prussian Empire. It is an industrial city but has some historic sites from the surviving buildings from the old town, to the Gdansk shipyard birthplace of Solidarity.

The service starting on November 3rd for Aberdeen and November 7th for Durham Tees Valley, for flights to Tenerife all year round from only £49.99 including taxes. It is also thanks to the Aberdeen City Council’s decision to lift the airport’s opening hour restrictions to allow many more new routes for the future.
